Himansu Khatua has built a remarkable reputation in filmmaking through both original storytelling and successful adaptations of literary works. He has not only earned recognition for films based on his own writings but has also achieved great success in bringing stories written by others to life on screen.

Matira Bandhana

One of his notable works, Matira Bandhana, is based on “Trunk of Ganesh” by Jayanta Mohapatra. Another highly acclaimed film, Krantidhara, is adapted from the novel Jhada Parara Surya by Iti Samanta. Both films received widespread appreciation and multiple awards. Krantidhara earned several State Film Awards, the Asian Excellency Award at the international level, and was adjudged as the Best Film at a South Korea Film Festival.

Sunya Swarupa

His filmmaking journey began in 1996 with his debut directorial film Sunya Swarupa, which explored a challenging spiritual subject centered on a saint. The film gained significant recognition after being screened at both national and international platforms. It was adjudged the Best Feature Film in Odia at the 44th National Film Festival (1996) and also received Odisha State Film Awards in five categories, including Best Film and Best Director.

Kathantara

In 2005, he directed Kathantara, presented by the popular Odia family magazine Kadambini and supported by Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT and KISS, and produced by Iti Samanta. The film was honored with the National Film Award for Best Odia Film and also won multiple State Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Story.

Kahani Nuhen

His short film Kahani Nuhen, presented by Kadambini Media, was adjudged the Best Short Film at the first State Telefilm Awards. Additionally, he directed Kahe Ballava, an experimental film inspired by Mughal themes and Odishan culture, which earned critical appreciation for its unique narrative style.

Apart from filmmaking, Himansu Khatua has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the field of film education and media. The Government of India appointed him as the Director of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in West Bengal, one of the country’s premier film institutes. He is the first person from the Odia film industry to achieve this prestigious position, marking a moment of pride and distinction.

In 2015, he was entrusted with the responsibility of leading Kalinga TV as its Managing Director by Achyuta Samanta. Guided by the three core principles — Positive, Realistic, and Constructive — he successfully managed the channel and conceptualized numerous creative television programs. These shows gained immense popularity and helped Kalinga TV achieve a distinctive position in the media landscape.

Through his perseverance, creative vision, and leadership, Himansu Khatua has not only contributed significantly to cinema but has also played a vital role in nurturing talent and shaping the future of the film and media industry.
